Long Term Health and Youth: Tips for Men

Over the next few weeks I will be talking about men’s health issues. Men traditionally have had shorter lives and more health problems. However, this does not have to be the norm. Research has shown that men can dramatically improve their mortality rate by exercising each day.

Generally men are very active when they are children and teenagers, however, as they reach their thirties their activity level tends to decline sharply. This is decline in physical activity is caused by more demanding work schedules and family commitments. However, these scheduling conflicts not only increase a man’s stress level, but they also impair his overall health and mortality rate. Fortunately, if you are a man, then there is a relatively painless solution to these problems.

By simply adding 45 minutes of vigorous exercise to your daily schedule, you can improve the quality and longevity of your life. However, if you want to experience the health benefits promised by researchers, you need to make every minute count. This means that a slow stroll through the park is not going to cut it. You need to get your heart rate up and your body sweating. Brisk walking, jogging, mountain biking, walking up stairs and boxing are all great exercises that get your heart racing quickly.

Being active through your entire life is the ultimate goal. In order to accomplish this goal you will need to take work your way up gradually from a sedentary lifestyle. Walking is a great place to start. If you are a little more coordinated try roller blading. Finding someone to workout with can also be helpful.

Long term health and youth are not given to you, you have to work for them. However, the process of staying healthy can be a lot of fun. Talk to your doctor or long term care provider for advice about what exercises are right for you and to give you the okay to start a new exercise routine.
