Summer is a time when we all like to have fun. However, it is also a good time to think about your future long term care needs, especially if you already have health concerns and risk factors working against you. Since accident rates are down during the summer months, this is the best time to shop for long term care insurance policy options.

The first topic that you will want to think about is where you want to receive your long term care, in the event that you need it. For example, you can choose between a long term care facility or in home care. If you want to be cared for in your own home then chances are Medicare will not provide you with enough coverage to accomplish this goal. This means that you will need supplemental or long term care insurance in order to pay for your in home long term care.

If you prefer to be taken care of in a long term care facility, then long term care insurance can help you pay for a good retirement home or nursing home. Since you are probably still fairly healthy now and able to get around, now is the time to check out nursing homes in your area and possibly even in your state and neighboring states to find one that you like. When you tour a nursing home look at the cleanliness of the facility, the patient to staff member ratio and the overall mental condition of the patients. Good signs that a nursing home is a quality institution include happy patients, high staff member to patient ratios, a clean environment and plenty of scheduled activities.
