Disadvantages of Nursing Homes

This week I’d like to talk about the pros and cons of nursing homes. Since nursing homes are a fact of life that most people will need to deal with, they are not the best option for everyone. However, in order to make plans for your future long term care needs you need to plan ahead so you get to decide what option you want and not someone else.

The pros of using a nursing home for your long term care needs are pretty straight forward. You will have someone watching out for you, helping you with basic personal care, making sure you eat and that tend to your medical care. Nursing homes are a great option for a lot of people because most long term care insurance policies, like AARP long term care insurance and Medicare, cover nursing home care.

The disadvantages of nursing homes are based a lot on their cost and the type of lifestyle you want to live when you are older. Cost is a huge consideration when selecting a nursing home. Many care plans for long term care insurance will limit how much money you will have to work with and how many days in a nursing home they will cover. Because of this you may need to buy more insurance or find a supplemental insurance policy. Next, if you enjoy being independent and if you want to stay in your own home, then nursing homes are not the best option for you. Instead you will want to look into insurance policies that will cover in home long term care.
