Avoid Nursing Homes With Long Term Care Insurance

Last week I talked about mobility issues and long term care. This week’s topic is avoiding nursing homes. While not entirely avoidable in some cases, there are things that you can do to improve your chances of remaining independent and comfortable in your own home for a longer period of time.

The first thing that you can do to improve your chances of not needing nursing home care is to practice preventative medicine. This means getting an annual check up, eating a healthy balanced diet, getting regular exercise, keeping your mind active and taking your prescribed medications as directed by your doctor. This also means that you participating in cholesterol and cancer screening as recommended by your doctor. These strategies will help keep your body healthy and in good condition, which will reduce your chances of developing debilitating diseases and physical conditions.

In addition to keeping yourself healthy, you will also want to prepare yourself financially to cover the cost of home health care in the event that you need a little extra help. Medicare programs do cover some home health care, but not usually enough to keep you out of a nursing home if you have a chronic condition. Long term health care insurance is a great supplemental insurance program that you can use to cover your home health care costs.

Long term care costs can quickly force you out of your home and into a nursing home. If you want to avoid this then you need long term care insurance that will allow you to take advantage of preventative care and that will also cover your home health costs.
