Healthy Thanksgiving Tips

Thanksgiving is only a couple of weeks away and we are all starting to worry about putting on extra weight or going off of our diets. Well, there are several ways you can enjoy your Thanksgiving meal without tripling your calorie count for the day. The following tips will help you to conserve calories this Thanksgiving.

Tip No. 1: Use Low Fat Ingredients

The easiest way to reduce the amount of calories that you consume on Thanksgiving is to replace full fat ingredients with low or reduced fat ingredients. For example, if you are making a string bean casserole, use the cream of mushroom soup that is 98 percent fat free. You can also save fat calories by using skim milk instead of whole milk or by using soy milk instead of cow’s milk. You can also save fat calories by using low fat margarine instead of butter.

Tip No. 2: Use Leaner Cuts of Meat

One of the ingredients that wracks up the calories at your Thanksgiving dinner is the meat that you serve. Turkey is a great source of protein because it is much leaner than ham or beef. However, not all parts of the turkey are as low fat as others. To ensure that the only meat that is available is low fat, cook a turkey breast instead of a whole turkey. This will not only reduce the number of calories that you consume per serving, but it will also reduce the amount of prep work and cooking that you have to do.

Follow simple tips, like the ones above to reduce your vulnerability to illnesses and diseases that will lead to an increased dependence on long term care.
