Prepare for Fall With These Long Term Care Tips
Tips for Safety Proofing the Inside of Your Home

This month we have been talking about fall safety tips. This week I’d like to talk about in-house safety tips that you can use to prevent injuries inside your home. These tips are just suggestions and they may not work for everyone, but for most people they can reduce the chances of slips and spills.

Inside Safety Tip No. 1: Use Non-Skid Mats Near Doors

The first way to cut down on slips and falls in your home is to place non-skid mats in front of your exterior doors. These mats will prevent visitors and your family members from slipping on your floor because their shoes are wet. You can also provide an absorbent mat near the door to help dry the bottom of people’s shoes and to help prevent slips and falls.

Inside Safety Tip No. 2: Identify and Seal Air Leaks Around Windows and Doors

Air leaks around your windows and doors are not only going to make it more likely that you will catch a cold, but they also increase the chances that moisture will enter your home and create a slippery surface. There are several ways to seal air leaks. Air leaks around windows can be sealed using plastic weathering proofing kits. These kits can be found at most department stores and they are fairly inexpensive.

Inside Safety Tip No. 3: Add Rails to the Bathroom

If you are worried about bathroom safety then it may be time to install a railing system. Rails can be added near a toilet using a wall mounted rail system or using a freestanding rail system that sets around the toilet. Rails can also be added to the bathtub using a simple cordless drill.
