Long Term Care and Your Medical History

Evolving Health and Evolving Long Term Care Needs
Changing Long Term Care Needs

Last week we talked about updating your long term care insurance when you get married or divorced. This week I’d like to talk about updating your ltc insurance coverage when you develop a new medical condition. As mentioned in earlier posts, your health is always in flux. As you age, genetics, lifestyle choices and environmental factors push your health into new directions. Because of this, you need to be proactive when it comes to managing your health insurance coverage.

According to “the National Body Challenge” genetics really only play a role in your health until you turn 60. After that point it is your lifestyle choices and environment that impact how well you will age. This means that if you are naturally healthy because of your genetics, things can take a nasty turn after you retire if you don’t stay active and if you don’t watch your diet. To ensure you take full advantage of the edge your genetics provide you, you need to do your part to stay healthy, and this includes planning ahead for long term care needs.

As you age your body is going to change and so is your health. If you stay proactive about the management of your health you will be able to identify problems early in their development and implement treatment and management plans that will minimize the side effects from the condition. As you develop medical conditions, or as you become aware of risk factors for medical conditions, you need to adjust your long term care coverage to ensure that you will have the coverage needed to meet the medical care requirements of your new conditions. For example, if you develop diabetes your long term care needs will include things like insulin, blood glucose meters and supplies and regular nurse care.
